Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This book is based on Red Hat® Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5) and is intended for individuals who plan to take the new Red Hat® Certified Technician (RH202) and/or Red Hat® Certified Engineer (RH302) exams and pass them, want to use it as a quick on-the-job resource or like to learn RHEL from the beginning in an easy-to-understand way. The book has 31 chapters and facilitates readers to grasp concepts, understand implementation procedures, learn command syntax, configuration files and daemons involved, and comprehend troubleshooting. The chapters are divided into four areas: Linux Essentials, RHEL System Administration, RHEL Network and Security Administration, and RHEL Troubleshooting. 01. Linux Essentials (Chapters 1 to 7) covers the basics of Linux. Information provided includes general Linux concepts, basic commands, file manipulation and file security techniques, text file editors, shell features, basic shell and awk programming and other essential topics. These chapters are good for gaining an overall understanding of Linux and cover common skills useful for both exams. 02. RHEL System Administration (Chapters 8 to 19) covers system administration concepts and topics including hardware management, local installation, X Window and desktop managers, software and user/group account administration, disk partitioning using standard, RAID and LVM, file system and swap management, system shutdown and boot procedures, kernel management, backup, restore and compression functions, print services administration, and automation and system logging. These chapters cover objectives outlined for the RH202 exam. 03. RHEL Network and Security Administration (Chapters 20 to 30) covers network and security administration concepts and topics such as OSI and TCP/IP reference models, subnetting and IP aliasing, network interface administration, routing, basic network testing and troubleshooting tools, naming services (DNS, NIS, LDAP) and DHCP; Internet services and electronic mail management, time synchronization with NTP, resource sharing with NFS, AutoFS and Samba, network-based and hands-free automated installation, Apache web server and Squid caching/proxy server, secure shell, PAM, TCP Wrappers, IPTables, NATting, SELinux and recommendations for system hardening. These chapters cover objectives set for the RH302 exam. 04. RHEL Troubleshooting (Chapter 31) covers a number of sample system, network and security troubleshooting scenarios. This chapter covers objectives related to diagnoses and troubleshooting for both exams. The book covers ALL official exam objectives and includes several exercises for exam practice. This book is not a replacement for RHCT®/RHCE® training courses offered by Red Hat, Inc., but may be used to prepare for both the exams. The information contained in this book is not endorsed by Red Hat, Inc. Good Luck on the exams .........

I work with Linux every day in the workplace and am in the process of studying for the RHCT exam. A class was offered in-house on RHEL and I enrolled. As part of the class, we all received a copy of this book. I have only one complaint with the book, but otherwise I am very pleased with it.

This is not a comprehensive does-it-all book that will teach everything there is to know - it is a study guide designed to help the reader prepare for the RHCT and RHCE exams, and it is also a reference guide. In these roles, it is very sufficient. Material is laid out in a very clear and straighforward manner, accessible to most readers needing to gain quick knowledge. It does skimp on some details here and there and there are some holes in the knowledge base, but I think most users will be very pleased with this manual. The important thing to remember here is that it is very detailed, not comprehensive.

I appreciate the basic flow between chapters, which seem to be geared to a generalized intro to Linux much like most programming books teach various topics in a logical order for mastery. While this works great for teaching for general knowledge, it is not an optimal flow for the exams. Using the Jang book as a guide, which places the material covered for the RHCT in the first 8 chapters, this book jumps about a bit and makes separation of the two exam targets a lot more difficult. Keep this in mind if you are pursuing the RHCT.

My biggest complaint with this book is the frequent errors in grammar and verb tense. The editing on this book could have been tighter.

As a reference and study guide, this is a very good resource and will serve the reader well. It is not perfect but is a fine choice for those gearing up for the RHCE in particular and makes a superb reference manual.

5 out of 5 stars Well Organized RHCE Book   February 9, 2010

I am very satisfied with this purchase. This book is great for RHCE preparation as well as for reference.
Content is very neatly organized into 30 chapters (no repetition of same content as most of books do) last chapter is dedicated for troubleshooting.

You won't feel bored while reading this book; concepts are explained with diagrams wherever necessary. All configurations are well explained in steps with appropriate example that makes it easy to remember & implement practically. The most unique feature of this book is easy browsing throughout the content, as the author dedicated a separate chapter to key configurations like mail server, DNS, NFS, Samba, SCP etc.

If you are looking for a RHEL book for RHCE/RHCT self-preparation as well as a good reference must give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Best RHEL 5 BOOK EVER FOR EXAM PREP!!!   January 27, 2010

The Best RHEL 5 book ever, especially for exam prep; the only problem I have is that it's 700 pages. I'm confident between reading this book and setting up RHEL 5 on an old computer I can pass the RH202 or RH302 with ease. This book probably wouldn't be a good start for linux noobs though, you'll want to have some experience with the command line before you crack this baby open or you'll just get discouraged.
